Metaldehyde's primary application is as a molluscicide in agricultural practices to control slugs and snails that threaten crops. It is available in various formulations:

• Pellet Form: Concentrations ranging from 1.8% to 8%.
• Liquid Form: Concentrations up to 20%.

Additionally, metaldehyde has been explored for use as a fuel due to its flammability properties.

Metaldehyde exhibits significant toxicity to various organisms, particularly molluscs. Its mode of action involves causing excessive mucus production in these organisms, leading to dehydration and death. In mammals, metaldehyde can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, followed by neurological symptoms including seizures and central nervous system depression. The oral lethal dose (LD50) varies among species but is notably toxic at doses greater than 100 mg/kg.

• Acute Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, ataxia, tremors, convulsions.
• Chronic Exposure Effects: Testicular atrophy in males and potential carcinogenic effects observed in animal studies.
