This action is primarily due to its interference with folate synthesis, which is vital for nucleic acid production in bacteria. The compound has been shown to be effective against various gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

While sulfamerazine sodium is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and hypersensitivity reactions. More severe hematologic effects like anemia and thrombocytopenia may occur in susceptible individuals.
