Cresols have a wide range of applications:

Cresols exhibit significant biological activity, primarily as antimicrobial agents. They are effective disinfectants due to their ability to disrupt bacterial cell membranes, leading to cell lysis and death. Cresols are also toxic to humans and animals; exposure can result in severe skin burns, respiratory irritation, and systemic toxicity. Ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal distress and neurological effects such as confusion or coma.
