Glycoluril

Glycoluril has a wide range of applications:

• Water Treatment: Used as a biocide for swimming pool disinfection and sludge control in papermaking.
• Coatings: Acts as a biocide in water-based paints and cleaning agents.
• Fertilizers: Investigated as a slow-release nitrogen source.
• Polymer Chemistry: Serves as a monomer for producing cucurbiturils and other macrocyclic compounds that bind cations and neutral molecules effectively.

While glycoluril itself has limited direct biological activity, its derivatives exhibit significant biological properties. For instance, some derivatives serve as biocides in water treatment and are effective against various microbial species. The slow-release nitrogen fertilizer potential of glycoluril has been explored but remains underutilized due to cost factors.
