Cysteamine has several applications:

• Medical Use: It is primarily used to treat cystinosis and has been approved by regulatory agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency. It is available in oral and ophthalmic formulations.
• Radioprotection: Cysteamine has been recognized as a chemical radioprotector, enhancing recovery from radiation exposure by mitigating oxidative damage.
• Antioxidant Properties: Its role in stimulating glutathione synthesis makes it valuable in various therapeutic contexts involving oxidative stress.

Cysteamine exhibits various biological activities, most notably its role in reducing cystine accumulation in lysosomes. By converting cystine into a more soluble form, it facilitates the exit of cysteine from lysosomes, which is critical for preventing organ damage in individuals with cystinosis. Furthermore, cysteamine has been shown to stimulate the synthesis of glutathione, an important antioxidant in cellular defense mechanisms. Its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier also suggests potential neurological implications, although further research is needed in this area.
