High levels of trimethylamine can lead to trimethylaminuria, commonly known as "fish odor syndrome," a condition resulting from genetic defects affecting its degradation. This compound is metabolized in the liver to trimethylamine N-oxide, which has been linked to cardiovascular diseases due to its potential role in atherosclerosis.
