2-tert-butoxyethanol has a wide range of applications:

• Solvent: It is extensively used in paints, varnishes, lacquers, and cleaning products due to its solvency properties.

The biological activity of 2-tert-butoxyethanol primarily revolves around its metabolic pathways. Upon exposure, it is metabolized to 2-butoxyacetic acid, which is rapidly excreted in urine. Acute exposure can lead to respiratory irritation and headaches at concentrations around 100 ppm. Long-term exposure has been linked to blood cell hemolysis in animal studies, although humans appear less sensitive to these effects. Importantly, there is no significant evidence suggesting that it is mutagenic or carcinogenic in humans.
