Chloroacetone

Chloroacetone has various industrial applications:

Chloroacetone exhibits significant biological activity, primarily as an irritant and toxic agent. It has been shown to cause:

• Irritation: Exposure leads to ocular and respiratory tract irritation, with immediate lacrimation at low concentrations.
• Toxicity: It is toxic via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact, potentially causing skin burns and delayed pulmonary edema. In vitro studies indicate that chloroacetone reacts with glutathione, depleting this critical antioxidant in cells.
