It acts by interfering with neurotransmission at autonomic ganglia, leading to reduced vascular resistance and subsequently lowering arterial pressure. Its mechanism involves a modest inhibitory effect on acetylcholine synthesis and breakdown, although it does not function as a potent cholinesterase inhibitor. Toxicological studies indicate that the lethal dose (LD50) for its hydrochloride salt varies based on administration route: approximately 74 mg/kg intravenously and 413 mg/kg orally in mice.
