Biological Activity of 90-13-1

Research indicates that 1-chloronaphthalene can be biodegraded by specific bacterial cultures that utilize it as the sole carbon source. Metabolites formed during this biodegradation include 8-chloro-1,2-dihydro-1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene and 3-chlorosalicylic acid, which can further degrade to 3-chlorocatechol and eventually mineralize to carbon dioxide through the ortho-cleavage pathway. Exposure to this compound may lead to symptoms such as skin irritation, headaches, fatigue, and vertigo.
