Ethylenethiourea has been classified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a Group B2 probable human carcinogen due to its teratogenic effects observed in animal studies. It has been shown to cause birth defects in rats when administered orally or dermally. Moreover, exposure to ethylenethiourea can lead to various health issues, including skin irritation and thyroid dysfunction. Its role as a biomarker for exposure to ethylenebisdithiocarbamates, commonly used fungicides, highlights its biological significance in agricultural contexts.
