Biological Activity of 123-63-7
Paraldehyde exhibits sedative-hypnotic properties and has been used in medical settings for treating acute alcoholic dementia. Its mechanism involves the reduction of acetylcholine release during neuronal depolarization, although the exact pathway remains unclear. Approximately 93% of orally administered paraldehyde is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and it is primarily metabolized to carbon dioxide and water via aldehyde dehydrogenase.
